Our Cornwall-based transportation team has been appointed by Mace and Ward Williams Associates to the Mid Cornwall Metro, a project that will benefit from £56.8m in funding to improve rail links between Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Falmouth.
Led by Ben Smith-Laing, our team secured the appointment through the MWJV Framework. We will be designing improved pedestrian and cycle links between Penryn station, the prestigious university campus and the picturesque town centre. This aim is to streamline travel routes, reduce reliance on private vehicles and encourage sustainable modes of transportation
Mid Cornwall Metro received £50m of investment from the government’s ‘Levelling Up’ fund, which aims to inject long-needed investment into the south west of England’s rail services.
It’s anticipated that the project will revolutionise transportation infrastructure in the region, offering the local community the provision of hourly trains and serving some of the largest towns in Cornwall.
Works will see the installation of longer platforms at two Falmouth stations, accompanied by a second platform at Newquay and a new crossing place on the Newquay branch at Tregoss Moor. The initiative complements Penryn's ongoing electric bike trials, making it an integral part of a wider effort to foster sustainable transport alternatives within the county.
The project is expected to complete in September 2023.
