We're giving Hafod Morfa Copperworks in Swansea three cheers after taking home three awards this month:
Heritage project - RICS Wales Awards
Sustainability award - Insider Wales Property Awards
Regeneration & Retrofit award - Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards
Our civil, structural MEP, acoustics and geo-environmental engineers helped breathe new life into this former hub of copper production, which closed its doors in the 1980s, sitting unsafe and derelict for decades.
From listed structures to contamination to archaeological surprises, the unique industrial history of Hafod Morfa Copperworks - once the largest of its kind in the world - meant transforming this 12.5-acre site into a contemporary facility was a challenge like no other for the project team.
But thanks to a council-led initiative and years of hard work, it is now home to Penderyn Distillery, whose new whisky distillery, barrel store and visitor centre is set to attract 50,000 visitors a year.
It's acting as something of a catalyst to attract new business, leisure and tourism to the area. Through this project, the team have demonstrated that a successful, modern destination can be created on a complex, listed site - all while retaining much of its proud industrial heritage.
Our Regional Director for Wales, Matt Ace, said:
"This project was an effort from every angle, a monumental accomplishment in taking one of the most contaminated sites in Wales from wasteland to wonder. The Hafod Copperworks epitomises ours and the whole team's commitment to a better future for the relics of our industrial powerhouse past, and paves the way for Swansea's future."
Congratulations once again to the whole project team:
